With IVF, a awidely known Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) procedure, eggs are obtained from the female after her ovaries have been stimulated with fertility drugs. While under a short period of sedation and with the use of ultrasound guidance, a needle is inserted into the ovaries through the vagina wall and eggs are aspirated. These eggs are then fertilized in the laboratory (invitro) with the partner's sperm and the developing embryos are cultured for three to six days.
Embryo transfer is performed on day 3 of the IVF process or on day 5 at the blastocyst stage of embryo development. The embryo transfer procedure is performed with a small catheter that places the embryos into the uterine cavity. RGI recommends that when PGD is done, transfer takes place on Day 5. Approximately 10-12 days after embryo transfer, a blood sample is taken to determine pregnancy.
RGI has a wide variety of ART procedures available to the patient. Determining the right treatment and procedure is done on a case by case basis. Like most qualified ART centers, we perform GIFT and ZIFT; however, the majority of ART cycles are IVF cycles.
